PRODUCT DETAILS:
Choose your housing and available image intensifier tube to configure a Steele-built night vision monocular. Compare the optics, included equipment and setup guidance below.
MBS U.L.R optics included
U.L.R means Ultra Light Rugged. These PVS-14-pattern optics combine reduced weight with aluminum reinforcement at the objective and diopter interfaces for added impact durability.
About 23% lighter than standard FUJI optics: save approximately 29.5 g per monocular or 59 g per binocular while retaining MBS U.L.R’s reinforced aluminum objective and diopter interfaces.
40° field of view · 29 mm eye relief · 97.5 g per monocular optics set / 195 g per binocular optics set, including diopters.
Optical performance: Strong flare suppression and contrast, with approximately 8% greater light transmission than Noctis optics reported in comparative optical testing.
Compare optics weight & upgrade options
| Optics | Mono set | Bino set |
|---|---|---|
| FUJI — standard | ~127 g | ~254 g |
| MBS U.L.R | 97.5 g | 195 g |
| RPO 4.0 — standard diopter | ~80.8 g | ~161.6 g |
RPO saves another 16.7 g per monocular / 33.4 g per binocular in this standard-diopter comparison. Lightweight RPO diopters can reduce weight further: a configuration with a 3D-optimized eyepiece housing weighs approximately 72.6 g per complete set.
Lightweight value comes standard. MBS U.L.R is included in this build with no optics upgrade charge. RPO 4.0 offers further weight reduction at an additional cost.
RPO 4.0 and FUJI upgrades are offered as available. Contact sales@steeleindinc.com or 800-674-7302 for availability and upgrade pricing before ordering.

Reference optics weights, not complete device weights. One monocular set includes one objective and one eyepiece with diopter; a binocular set uses two of each. FUJI: approximately 53.5 g + 73.5 g. RPO: 38 g + 42.8 g with a standard diopter. Weights vary with configuration.
How to choose your tube
The last tube-selection field is where you choose the individual unit—not just a manufacturer or product family.
1. Choose a manufacturer
Start with the manufacturers currently shown in the selector. Availability changes as individual tubes are sold or added.
2. Choose a tube model
Select the listed tube category and phosphor type. The category narrows the options; the exact model designation appears in the individual tube listing.
3. Select the actual tube
Choose a serial-numbered option. Review the model code, specifications and corresponding photo together. Two tubes with the same model code can have different measured values.
4. Complete your setup
Review the selected price, add compatible accessories and confirm the final configuration before adding it to your cart.
Tube specifications explained
Use the actual specifications and cosmetic photo together. No single number captures every part of the viewing experience.
| Specification | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SNR | Signal-to-noise ratio | A guide to how clean the image looks in low light. Higher values generally mean less visible noise. |
| Resolution | LP/mm | The tube’s ability to resolve fine detail. Read it alongside SNR, optics and the rest of the specifications. |
| FOM | Resolution × SNR | A useful comparison number, not a complete score for image quality or cosmetic condition. |
| EBI | Equivalent background illumination | A measure of the tube’s own background signal. Consider it with SNR and your intended lighting conditions. |
| Halo | Bloom around bright lights | Describes the halo around a bright point of light. Smaller values generally indicate a tighter halo. |
| Gain | Light amplification | Describes amplification, when listed. It is separate from resolution and from the housing’s manual gain control. |
A practical way to compare two tubes
Start with your budget and phosphor preference. Compare SNR and resolution, then consider EBI, halo and the photo. Treat FOM as a useful reference rather than the only reason to choose a tube.
Model codes such as L3Harris 1701, 26LA or 26LM identify different offerings when available. They do not replace the individual serial number, specification values or photo. Choose the actual tube option you want from the final list.
Reading tube photos
Use tube photos to inspect cosmetics.
Look for spots, shading and their position in the image. Camera settings and lighting can change apparent brightness, contrast and color, and very small spots may not be visible. Photos are a useful inspection aid, not a precise simulation of the view through the finished device.
White phosphor (WP) and green phosphor (GP) identify the viewing color. Confirm the phosphor type in the option you select. If cosmetic cleanliness is a priority, contact us about the specific serial number before ordering.
Built and checked at Steele
We build and test every system in house at Steele Industries using Hoffman test sets. Your completed device ships directly from us, and every order includes our own Steele Industries quality-control report.
- Component checks: We inspect the image intensifier and housing.
- Assembly and optical setup: We assemble the device, set zero diopter and infinity focus, and check optical alignment.
- Purge and function testing: We purge the unit and test the completed housing’s functions.
- QC sign-off: The completed build is checked against our quality-control checklist and signed off before it goes to shipping.
- Final shipping inspection: Our shipping team visually inspects the device and package contents, then completes a second sign-off before dispatch.
What’s included & accessories
This listing is for an assembled monocular, not a bare housing or loose tube.
Included with your monocular
- One Nocturn Industries Talon night vision monocular
- One objective lens cap and one eyepiece cover
- Steele Industries hard case
- Warranty card
- Steele Industries quality-control report
- Tube specification sheet
Battery not included. Please supply the correct battery for your housing.
For a helmet-mounted setup
- A compatible helmet or head-mounted platform
- A compatible night vision mount

- A retention tether and compatible lens protection, as desired
These accessories are separate unless specifically included in your selected package. Confirm the complete mounting chain before ordering.
J-arm + mount
The J-arm connects the monocular to the mount; the mount connects to the helmet’s shroud. Both interfaces need to match.
Protection + retention
Lens protection and a retention tether serve different purposes. Choose compatible accessories for your device and mounting setup.
Optional upgrades
Focus accessories and other add-ons can be selected around your needs. A laser is not required for ordinary viewing through the monocular.
Warranty & support
Keep your order details and device/tube serial numbers with the supplied paperwork.
Your selected configuration
The builder identifies the tube option you choose. Review your selection and any accessories before checkout.
Assembly and documentation
The components are assembled into your chosen monocular. Your package includes a quality-control report and tube specification sheet.
Help after delivery
Steele is your contact for configuration questions, service and warranty requests. The current policies explain the applicable coverage.
10-year limited device warranty
Steele’s published warranty covers qualifying manufacturing defects under normal use, unless otherwise stated. Coverage, exclusions and claim requirements are governed by the current policy.

Common questions
Open a question for a straightforward answer.
Is this a PVS-14 or a Talon?
This listing uses the Nocturn Talon housing. It shares PVS-14-style optics and mounting compatibility, but the Talon is a distinct monocular platform.
Do I choose an individual tube?
Yes. Complete the manufacturer and tube-model selections, then choose an individual option from the serial-numbered tube list. Review that option’s specifications and photo before ordering.
Does a higher FOM automatically mean a better purchase?
No. FOM combines resolution and SNR, but it does not describe every characteristic. Compare the other specifications, cosmetic condition, price and your priorities as well.
Can I use my existing helmet mount?
Possibly. You need a compatible J-arm between the Talon and the mount. Tell us which helmet mount and J-arm you own so we can confirm the interfaces.
When will my monocular ship?
Allow 1–2 weeks for assembly and quality-control checks before dispatch. Once complete, your device ships by overnight service with a signature required at delivery.
